I have just now returned from sailing with Liz the eastern Aegean in ‘Celtic Gold’ and completed my circumnaviation. It has taken me five years sailing in the spring and summer – a year continuous sailing all told. Ulysses took nineteen years to reach home in Ithaka, so perhaps it was not so long after all. In many places, I could have lingered and even settled but I wanted to complete my intended voyage.
I shall now spend the winter writing all the wonderful and extraordinary experiences up and try and make sense of the ancient civilization which evolved in the region which is the seabed of the West.
